I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this one! Not what you expect from a traditional Mills and Boon at all, I felt it was more a subtly amusing historical detective story。Mary is a Lady in the Victorian era, a sibling far down the pecking order in her family, who feels ignored and left behind。 She is determined to do as she wishes as far as she can, and finds herself solving mysteries that affect people she knows。 She meets Colonel Trefusis at a party held by her father, and over th I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this one! I wasn't sure what to expect with this novel, having not read Sarah Ferguson's first, however I really enjoyed it。 Mary was a wonderful heroine, demure when was needed as befits the society in which she was brought up in, yet there was a modern feisty streak to her which I loved and allowed us, the reader, to relate easily to her。 The relationship with Tre was a slow burn but it was lovely to see their friendship grow and their understanding that they did love each other。 I also really enjoyed t I wasn't sure what to expect with this novel, having not read Sarah Ferguson's first, however I really enjoyed it。 Mary was a wonderful heroine, demure when was needed as befits the society in which she was brought up in, yet there was a modern feisty streak to her which I loved and allowed us, the reader, to relate easily to her。 The relationship with Tre was a slow burn but it was lovely to see their friendship grow and their understanding that they did love each other。 I also really enjoyed the added historical notes at the back of the book and as a result, will be eager to read the first book。 **Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read an advanced e-copy of this book。 All opinions are my own ** 。。。more

Thank you for sending this book to me to review! I really enjoyed this book and so did my grandmother! I also passed it on to my mom to read as well。 It’s a modern take on history which I enjoy, it kept me captivated and it was a quick read for me。 Definitely recommend if you like history with a twist。

Written in the vein of a traditional historical romance story, this is like slipping on a comfortable pair of slippers and curling up with a mug of hot chocolate。 The delight is that it has none of the cringe moments and the neat working of some real people, places and events into this tale gives it a solid polish。 There are no real surprises here, but it is very nicely done

Lady Mary and Colonel Trefusis have a lot in common。。。 maybe too much。 The will-they, won't-they is strong in this book, but rather than bog the story down, it gave it forward momentum。 There were three self-contained mystery stories that followed the arc of their relationship, and each one was the perfect amount of fluffy fun and real intrigue。 If you like slow-burn romances with minimal spice, mysteries without gore, and Jane Austen style social politics, I recommend this book for you。 Lady Mary and Colonel Trefusis have a lot in common。。。 maybe too much。 The will-they, won't-they is strong in this book, but rather than bog the story down, it gave it forward momentum。 There were three self-contained mystery stories that followed the arc of their relationship, and each one was the perfect amount of fluffy fun and real intrigue。 If you like slow-burn romances with minimal spice, mysteries without gore, and Jane Austen style social politics, I recommend this book for you。 。。。more

The characters, by and large, are likeable and interesting with the bulk of the focus rightfully on Mary and Tre。 Even the side characters were fun - especially Lady Rolle。 The writing flowed well and with charm, building the era and clothing and world without overdoing it。 The romance, too, was well-paced, helped by the time jumps that spread it over a few years。 The time was necessary as both characters needed to learn more about themselves, to grow, to find what was important。 Impressively, they used that time to learn to communicate, too。 Let's face it; that is a rare thing in a romance。 The mystery aspects were spread out through the book like little vignettes, building in importance as Mary learned and grew into who she was meant to be。 I really appreciated her character arc。 It is rare that a heroine in a period book gets that kind of growth, especially as it was not always forward。 She sometimes stepped back, went backwards, doubted herself and settled。 It was very real。My only issue (and it is pretty slight) was the occasional switch of POV to Mary's mother。 The chapters varying between Mary and Tre made sense, of course, but Charlotte's POV (while interesting) served only a sort of stage-setting purpose。 It was interesting to see how someone else viewed Mary but it did distract some。 It also shifted too much sympathy from Mary to Charlotte at times。#ARC #SarahFerguson 。。。more
